Sunday Morning Coffee Cake

The Monday Night Gamers got Gretchyn Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery Cookbook for Christmas.  I’ve been the lucky recipient of the experiments ever since.  This morning, she made the coffee cake.  It might have been the best I’ve ever eaten.

The cake was perfectly moist without being heavy.  The layer of powdered dark chocolate and brown sugar was rich without being decadent.  The streusel topping was perfectly sweet.  The whole was a beautiful accompaniment to coffee, contrasting the sweet and the bitter, complimenting the dark richness of the coffee with the round richness of the cake.

She made two of them.  One of them was large enough to share, saving the second for a snack later in the day.  She said that one of the differences was refrigerating the batter for about 20 minutes before baking, which may have led to the creamy texture.

Sometimes when you blog about food, you talk.  Sometimes, you let the pictures do the work.  Today is one of the latter.
